October: National Liver Awareness Month

October: National Liver Awareness Month

October is Liver Awareness Month

Did you know an estimated 100 million Americans live with some form of liver disease? This month is a good excuse to learn a little about this vital organ.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the liver performs over 500(!) functions. Here are some facts:

  • Produces of cholesterol to help carry fats through the body
  • Clears the blood of drugs, bacteria, and poisonous substances
  • produces bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion
  • Weighs in at a whopping 3 lbs for adults, and is the only solid organ that can completely regenerate!

Your liver works hard for you, so give it the care it deserves. Make an effort to eat some non-starchy vegetables (like cucumbers or broccoli) for nutrients and starchy vegetables (butternut squash season!) for fiber. Fresh fruits, lean proteins, nuts, or whole grains like wild rice or barley are also highly recommended for a liver-friendly diet. And don't forget an alcohol-free (0.00% abv) beer to wash it all down.

Visit the American Liver Foundation for more information - they provide educational programs, support networks, healthy recipes, and screening events to help raise awareness and support healthier futures.
